The National Archives, documents online has recently made available a free searchable database of World War 1 (WW1) campaign medals called Medal Index Cards (MIC) .
At the end of WWl the records of all men who had served were handwritten on index cards which are at the National Archives in Kew. These have been scanned and details put on a searchable database. As several million men served between 1914 an 1918 the more information you can put into the search boxes the better.
In my search for my grandfather I knew his regiment, the Gloucestershire and his army number. So I was able to type in his number and surname. The search was free, but I was then invited to pay £3.50 to see a scanned copy of his MIC or Medal Index Card.
I downloaded his card and it gave me the date of his entry into France, his battalion number, the date of his discharge, the date of his being given the SWB (Silver War Badge which was given to men who had been wounded) and other campaign medals. With this information and the purchase of a book about the Gloucestershire Regiment I was able to virtually follow his movements from August 1914 to the battle in which he was wounded in May 1915.

Together with the freeBMD site, this other site lets you search censuses for free. This gives you enough information to identify a family member. There is then a payment to look at a scanned copy of the actual census return. The best option is £4.95 for 10 looks at census returns. They can be downloaded and printed. The best way is to copy to a disc and get them printed on A3 paper at your local print shop, for easier reading.
